Givto privacy policy

Your privacy is very important to us. We believe in being fair, open and honest about how we collect, store and use your personal data. This policy sets out exactly what we do with the information we collect.

By registering to use Givto, you are agreeing to the practices set out in this policy. Please read this policy carefully and check that you understand it before registering with Givto.

Who is responsible for your data?

Givto is run by a charity called the Better Giving Partnership. We are registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales, charity number 1168976. Better Giving Partnership is the ‘controller’ of the personal data you provide to us when you use Givto.

Who does this policy apply to?

This policy applies to individuals and charities who register to use Givto.

What data do we collect from you and why do we need it?

When you register to use, we collect your:

  • title
  • name
  • address
  • email address
  • password
  • whether you pay tax in the UK and are therefore eligible for Gift Aid

We need this information so we can provide you with the Givto service.

Our payment service provider, Go Cardless Ltd, collects your:

  • name
  • address
  • banking sort code
  • bank account number

GoCardless Ltd needs this information so it can process your Direct Debit on our behalf. You can find out more about GoCardless Ltd and privacy in their Privacy Centre.

If you confirm when you register that you pay tax in the UK, we share with HMRC your:

  • title
  • name
  • address
  • confirmation that you pay tax in the UK
  • donation value

We share this information with HMRC so we can claim back the tax from the government that you have already paid on your donation (Gift Aid)

We will also collect information you provide, such as your name and email address, when you:

  • complete surveys for research purposes
  • report a problem with the website
  • contact us with a problem or question

What do we use your personal data for?

We only use the personal data we need to:

  • provide you with the Givto service, as outlined in our terms and conditions
  • collect your Direct Debit via our payment service provider, GoCardless Ltd
  • claim Gift Aid from HMRC if you confirm during registration that you are eligible

We keep a record of our dealings with you. This is to ensure we have an accurate history of our relationship and any problems you have experienced in case of disputes. We do this by keeping an email log.

Who do we share your personal data with?

We only share your personal data with:

  • GoCardless Ltd so that they can collect your Direct Debit
  • HMRC so that we can claim Gift Aid on your donations if you confirm during registration that you pay tax in the UK and are therefore eligible

We do not sell your information to anyone or use it for marketing purposes.

How long do we store your personal data for?

We store your personal information only for as long as necessary to provide you with our service and to meet our legal obligations.

We are required to keep records of financial transactions for up to seven years.

If you notify us that you no longer wish to use Givto, we will delete your information from our databases as soon as possible.

How do we keep your information safe?

When you register to use Givto our pages are secure. This means all the personal details you type in are encrypted before they’re sent to us.

We then store and use this information securely, so it can’t be read by anyone who doesn’t need to see it.

All the personal data we process and store is on servers that comply with EU data protection regulations. All these servers are located in the British Isles.

What about cookies?

Most internet browsers let websites store simple text files called ‘cookies’ on your computer.

Cookies allow a website to remember things, such as your username or password, so you don’t have to re-enter them every time you visit. They also help websites see how you’re using the site, and this can be used to improve website functions.

We have a legal responsibility to tell you about the kind of cookies we use, what they’re for and how to turn them off. We strongly suggest you accept our cookies though, to get the best possible service from our website.

You have a right to see the information we hold about you and to ask us to delete it. You can do this by making a request in writing to

If you wish to raise a complaint on how we have handled your personal data, please contact us and we will investigate the matter.
